What Is the Meaning of Good Health?
We all agree that our health is important. But what is the meaning of good health? Is it being disease-free? Does it refer to physical strength? Is it living a long life?
The World Health Organization created the following meaning for health in 1946:
“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
Nearly seventy years later, the same definition still holds! These days, however, the term “health” has morphed into the more expansive term “wellness” — which means living life to the max and reaching your fullest purpose and greatest potential. Bringing your life into balance with regard to the seven wellness indicators — your physical, emotional, intellectual, occupational, social, environmental and spiritual parts — can lead to true health in its most meaningful sense.
How Do You Get There?
You can start here! By design, To Your Health, NY! is an evolving site, one that will grow with your needs and adapt with the changing health and wellness community. As fellow members of this community, we’re here to help you define and navigate the various wellness practices around the city. In turn, we encourage all of you to join the conversation and share which practices work for you and which don’t.
What happens if you’re stiff and sore? Is it Pilates you need, a chiropractor, a yoga class, or should you start with acupuncture? Your food allergies might be making you miserable, but do you need a naturopath, a nutritionist, or, again, a chiropractor or an acupuncturist? Why do these services overlap? How do you choose? We’ll give as much guidance as we can; our community, at large, will hopefully offer the rest.
And there’s always the quest for weight control. Which of the many practices out there will produce lasting results? Will it be acupuncture, Pilates, chiropractic, martial arts, functional medicine, nutrition, running, or yoga — all of which claim to help you lose weight? Whichever you choose, you are no longer alone. From now on, you can work together with us — sharing experiences and resources, trials and triumphs — as we help each other achieve the state of wellness we’ve always dreamed of.
Who We Are
We are a team of professional writers and researchers from an independent company that has created and developed a huge number of informational products for the past thirty years. We are not health professionals, either by degree or self-proclamation!
Because we have, or know people who have, a variety of health issues and health-related questions, we decided to create a site dedicated to helping our users, and ourselves, on a journey toward health and wellness. We hope to glean the best from the best, but we expect bumps along the way; we anticipate both successes and failures in our choices, and we promise to share what went right and what went wrong. Mostly, we hope for a community of active participants who will enable us to shed light on the path toward good health.
